Fire Safety in Blocks of Flats

This module will cover the issue of the risks that blocks of flats pose to the safety of the occupants. There has been a number of high profile cases of fires in high rise residential buildings which have resulted in significant loss of life. This module will look at the contributory factors that make these buildings such a high rise including the effects of wind, terrain, height of building and the stack effect. It will also consider the issue of evacuating these occupancies along with some case studies. The issue of false alarms is covered and methods of reducing the impact this can have on the occupants. Preventing the fire spread by appropriate fire stopping is covered as the issue of fixed suppression
